The World Food Prize Foundation Selects Six Students for the Prestigious George Washington Carver Internship Program

The World Food Prize Foundation announced today the selection of six interns for the prestigious George Washington Carver (GWC) Internship program for the Summer of 2024. Since its inception in 2001, the GWC Internship program has impacted over 350 students worldwide.

Each academic semester and summer, the World Food Prize Foundation selects a group of highly qualified undergraduate and graduate students for this unique program, which provides them with the opportunity to take significant responsibility and initiative in planning and carrying out a wide range of the Foundation’s projects. Intern projects include event planning, youth programming, archival research, communications and more.

“The George Washington Carver internship program equips the younger generation to foster meaningful change and develop as leaders in global food security,” said Mashal Husain, Chief Operating Officer at the World Food Prize Foundation. “The success of all Foundation programs, which include the Norman E. Borlaug International Dialogue, Laureate Award Ceremony, youth outreach and more, would not be possible without the dedicated efforts of our interns.” 

Six interns from Drake University, Hamilton College, Iowa State University, Johnson & Wales University and the University of Iowa will gain firsthand experience in both the public and private side of operating an international nonprofit while increasing their understanding of the worldwide fight against hunger, malnutrition and poverty. The GWC interns will work alongside an individualized staff mentor and play an integral role in the organization's operations and preparations for the World Food Prize Week of Events in October. Additionally, interns will have the chance to work onsite at the Des Moines, Iowa headquarters, the Norman E. Borlaug Hall of Laureates. 

As an intern at the Foundation, I am looking forward to gaining hands-on experience in real world projects and learning invaluable lessons from staff, mentors and peers,” said Samantha Johnson, Summer GWC intern. “I admire the organization's mission and I look forward to refining my research, communication and project management skills while learning more about global food security initiatives.”
