Youth Voices: Lab Training & Exploring Central Business District

This marks my first week in lab.

On Monday, I went to the office to grab the two bags of potato samples we collected from two local markets, and walked in to the lab opposite to CIP office. It was my first time walking into the lab by myself because now I finally have access. 

I met up with Lucy, my lab supervisor, also later proven to be the best teacher one could ever ask for. 

This week in lab mainly serves the purpose of being familiarized with preparing potato samples, such that I could be more efficient when handling the samples from 20 farms that we will visit in the coming week.

The potato preparation process starts with washing. All of my potatoes are fresh from farm, which means that they are covered in a lot of mud, some of which are deeply embedded into wrinkles of their skin. While cleaning the potatoes properly, I also had to make sure not to damage their thin skin, since that could allow the minerals from tap water to be in contact with the flesh, messing with our mineral analysis later on...[CONTINUE READING]
